One of our favorite little gems to grow each year is Small Wonder Spaghetti Squash also known as cucurbita pepo. It’s a mini marvel in the garden and the kitchen, perfectly portioned for a meal for two, and packed with flavor, nutrients, and endless recipe potential.

Why We Love Small Wonder Spaghetti Squash
Unlike traditional spaghetti squash that can feel oversized for a small meal, the Small Wonder variety is just the right size for one or two servings. These personal-sized squashes have a creamy yellow rind and, once roasted, their flesh turns into delicate, tender strands that make the perfect substitute for pasta. We love turning them into spaghetti boats. just slice in half, roast, and stuff them with marinara, mushrooms, (veggie) meatballs, and a hearty helping of Mozzarella, or a combination of Mozzarella and Parmesan. It’s comforting, healthy, and gluten-free goodness.
Other delicious ways to enjoy them:
- Garlic Alfredo boats with spinach and grilled meatless chick’n for the vegetarians
- Southwest-style squash stuffed with black beans, corn, peppers, veggie ground beef, and a drizzle of avocado crema

Growing Small Wonder in Your Garden
Small Wonder Spaghetti Squash is a joy to grow and does particularly well in warm, sunny climates. Here’s what you need to know:
- Planting: Start from seed indoors 3–4 weeks before the last frost or sow directly in the ground when soil temps reach 70°F.
- Spacing: These vines can sprawl, so give them at least 3–4 feet of space or grow them vertically on a sturdy trellis to save ground space.
- Soil: Rich, well-draining soil with compost mixed in works wonders.
- Sunlight: Full sun, at least 6–8 hours a day.
- Watering: Keep soil moist but not soggy. Drip irrigation is ideal. We are fans of this 1/4th inch tubing with emitters every 6 inches.
Pests, Problems & Protection
Like most squash, Small Wonder can attract squash vine borers, squash bugs, and powdery mildew. We often use companion planting with marigolds to help naturally repel bugs.
For powdery mildew, we recommend spraying weekly with Neem Oil. It’s organic and safe for your garden ecosystem.
Harvesting & Ripeness Tips
Your spaghetti squash is ripe when:
- The skin turns a rich golden yellow
- It resists puncture with your fingernail
- The stem begins to dry out
Let them cure in a sunny spot for 7–10 days before storing, and they’ll keep for weeks!
Taste & Nutrition
Small Wonder has a slightly nutty, sweet flavor and a tender texture that works beautifully with both bold sauces and light herbs. It’s lower in carbs than pasta, gluten-free, and high in vitamins A, C, and B6, plus fiber and antioxidants.
One cup contains about 40 calories, so it’s a guilt-free base for indulgent meals.
