Farm Life, Frugal Self-Care & Perfect Brows: A DIY Eyebrow Tinting Adventure
Living on a farm doesn’t mean you give up all the little luxuries of life. Sure, I’ve traded high heels for muck boots, and my animals see me more than a makeup mirror does, but that doesn’t mean self-care goes out the window completely. In fact, I believe it’s an essential practice for those chasing pigs and chickens before your morning coffee or pulling weeds under the desert sun. It life’s little luxuries that bring balance.
That said, I’m frugal to the core. It’s in my DNA, passed along from my incredible Grandma Brimhall, a pioneer woman survivor of the Great Depression. So when I was treated to a beautiful eyebrow tint at a salon for my birthday one year, and saw how fast it faded, I just couldn’t justify spending that kind of money every few weeks to look good.
Enter: My brilliant, beautiful, courageous and spunky mother.
She swore eyebrow tinting was easy to do at home. And she was right.
DIY Eyebrow Tinting with “Just For Men” (Yes, Really!)
When my mom revealed her secret weapon was Just For Men: Moustache & Beard dye, I raised an eyebrow (pun intended). But after trying it myself, I’m a total convert. It’s affordable, the bottle lasts all year for repeated applications, and it looks fantastic as if you just stepped out of a salon pampered by a professional. And no one has to know your brows are powered by a product meant for your dad’s sideburns.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- Just For Men Mustache & Beard Dye (Choose a shade closest to your hair color. I opted for dark brown, whereas my mom likes black.)
- Q-tips
- The tray provided in the kit or a small mixing bowl
- Wet paper towel or makeup wipes
- Optional: petroleum jelly for skin protection
Step-by-Step Eyebrow Tinting:
- Mix the Dye
In the provided tray, mix equal parts color base and developer using the mixing stick that comes in the box. My mom likes to err by adding a little more color base than developer for a darker brow. A little goes a long way! - Prep Your Brows
You can apply a tiny bit of petroleum jelly around your brows to avoid staining the skin, but we skipped this and it worked fine. Just have some clean Q-tips handy in case you need to clean up! - Apply the Dye
Use a Q-tip to apply the dye to your brows in the shape you want. Be generous. And yes, you will look absolutely terrifyingly insane for a few minutes. You will panic. This is all normal. - Wait 5–6 Minutes
This is the part where your reflection might cause a panic attack. It gets DARK. Think Groucho Marx. Think Angry Birds. Again, do not panic too much. This is temporary. My mom likes to leave it on for 6 minutes because she prefers a darker look. - Wipe It Off
Use a wet paper towel or wipe to clean off the dye. Voilà! gorgeous, natural-looking, runway-worthy brows that frame your face like a dream and last for weeks. No makeup. No tattoos. So easy, convenient, low maintenance, natural and doesn’t break the bank!
Farm Wife Brow Drama: A Funny Moment to Remember
Let me paint the picture: I’m standing in the bathroom, Groucho brows blazing, and in a panic, I run to my husband Jeff and my dad, who are chatting in the office, to save me or tell me it doesn’t look that bad. My mom was chasing after me, telling me we weren’t finished and we needed to wipe it off quickly before it was too late. Both Jeff and dad froze like they’d seen a ghost.
“What. Happened. To your face?” Jeff gasped in horror.
I started nervously cackling. Hyperventilating. Trying not to cry-laugh as I reassured them it wasn’t permanent.
By the time I wiped the dye off, Jeff was stunned. “Okay…that’s actually amazing.”
But the real kicker? Shortly thereafter, Jeff and dad decided to prank me. They stuck black electrical tape over their eyebrows, striking dramatic poses sporting their faux unibrows. We were all dying laughing.
Moral of the story: DIY beauty on a budget can be glamorous and a comedy show all rolled into one.
