What Is Life Really About? A Quiet Reflection from the Farm

Lately, I’ve been sitting with some big thoughts. Ones that crept in quietly, like the soft rustle of leaves in our Elderberry forest. It started while reflecting on Jeff’s health challenges a few years back and how they temporarily affected his brain. Watching someone you love navigate something like that brings a new kind of awareness to just how intricate and mysterious life and the human body really is.
Isn’t it wild how the human body works? We have this miraculous cardiovascular system that delivers oxygenated blood through countless vessels. And that oxygen? We owe it to the plants, which in turn need our carbon dioxide. That kind of symbiotic relationship doesn’t feel accidental. It feels designed, like we’re part of something intentional and deeply interwoven.
And then there’s our brain. Not only does it keep us functioning, but it’s wired to remember things, to feel deeply, and to make sense of what we experience. Why would we be created this way unless we were meant to grow from our experiences? Maybe we’re meant to learn, to reflect, to contribute something meaningful, perhaps even eternal.
It’s also fascinating that all of us are born, grow, and eventually die. In between, we develop this urge to control everything around us. But what if that desire to control is what complicates life the most? Maybe life, at its core, is simple. Meant to be experienced, appreciated, and shared.
When we zoom out even further, beyond the farm, beyond our lives, I see these same systems replicated on a cosmic scale. The universe is full of patterns that mirror what’s happening inside us. It makes me wonder: are we part of a vast, beautiful system where everything belongs? Or are we sometimes the ones who disrupt it?
Are humans inherently good, or are we a bit like cells, some healthy and some destructive? Maybe we’re both. Maybe part of our purpose is to become the “good” within the system, to recognize when we’ve gone off-course, and to recalibrate toward harmony and balance.
These thoughts don’t come with easy answers. But they do leave me with a growing sense of reverence for the life inside me, around me, and far beyond me. They remind me to slow down, breathe in the citrus-scented air, and just be.
